Jeans Shopping

This weekend when I saw my mom she asked me what my plans were for the weekend. I told her I was going shopping and that I needed some new jeans. Her first response was to my husband standing next to me, “Oh dear, are you the poor soul who has to go with her?”

My mom took me shopping for my twenty-fifth birthday a little over a year ago. What was I shopping for? One pair of nice jeans. Since this was for my birthday, I was ready to splurge a little bit and pick out a pair that was maybe slightly more expensive then what I’d normally pay for a pair of jeans. However, since they were going to be expensive, I required that they fit perfectly.

We went to store after store. I tried on probably a hundred jeans. In one store there had been a sales associate helping us who kept bringing different pairs of jeans for me to try on. After being less than impressed with most of them, we ended up leaving the store not having purchased anything. As we were walking out the sales associate (who happened to be of the male species) says, “You’re telling me that you didn’t like even one out of the eighteen pairs you tried on?”

The hours passed by, and as we approached late afternoon I was feeling discouraged…as was my mom and sister and grandma that had tagged along for my birthday. What did I do next?

I cried.

Which then made my sister cry…and my mom might have cried, too. My grandma…well, she didn’t cry…she’s usually off in her own world! In the end, though, I ended up finding one pair that fit well at the very last store that we went to. Long day, but a semi-success.

This year ’round I went into this process of jeans shopping with a different mentality. I would definitely say that I’m in a much better place in my life as far as body image goes, and I armed myself with a few “rules” for jeans shopping. (These are just rules that work for me, I’m not saying that they work for everyone. We are all different!)

1. Don’t let the size mess with your head. So many different brands run small or run large, so there’s really no telling which is right. And do you know what? It doesn’t matter. I am not a number and you are not a number. I think in my closet right now I have pants ranging seven different sizes.

2. Don’t go shopping when you are emotional. I’m not an emotional shopper by any means, and I’m not going to go out and spend a bunch of money if I’ve had a fight with my husband. However, I do know that when I’m feeling down, or stressed, or anxious, or angry, I am much more likely to have a negative body image.

3. Don’t buy a different size jean just because you think they might fit you in the future. I know this works for some people, but I am now a firm believer in buying clothes to fit you comfortably today. There are not many things worse than having a pair of pants in your closet that you hope to fit into someday. If you do lose weight then you can donate your old jeans, and then buy new ones for yourself again! Double score!

4. Take your time. Saturday wasn’t my first attempt at this jeans shopping extravanganza. I have actually gone out a few times in search of jeans. Saturday was just the first time I found some that I loved.

5. Don’t panic. It’s okay if nothing is fitting right. I’m pretty certain that less than 3% of all jeans are made to fit someone like me (and I bet we all feel that way!) If they fit my waist then they’re too tight in the thigh, or they it fit my thighs then they’re too big in the waist, or if they seem to fit perfectly then they’re actually too long, or I look weird in skinny jeans but stumpy in wide leg jeans…blah, blah, blah. It may take awhile…it may take trying on over a hundred pairs…but there will be a pair for you.

6. Remember that being a beautiful person doesn’t have anything to do with what is on the exterior. Yeah, yeah, it’s cliche, but it’s so true. When you are feeling discouraged, just remind yourself this.

7. When you find them, buy them! Or two. Or three!

(See, I told you they’d be too long! 🙂 )

Do you have any “rules” of shopping?!

Weekend Recap

This weekend ended up being extremely successful, productive, and downright delightful!

I tried a new food (which I ended up loving!), I made a new food (smashing s’mores!), I got to see my family, I got to see all my friends, and I achieved one of my October goals! The only negative to the weekend is the fact the the Pretty Pretty Punters lost their first game to the Battling Bruisers, putting them in a tie for second place. I blame it on the Greenbay Packers. Catches by twelve different players…seriously? Why not just the three players I had? And Finley, why don’t you try not dropping so many passes.

Oh my goodness…where is this blog going?! When did My Pinky toes become a place to talk football and trash talk professional football players? I’m sorry Finley, but for real…try catching a few more, please…for me!

Now…back to where this post was supposed to be going…

Saturday morning I woke up nice and early to meet my running gals for a nice long run. I’m seriously in love with my running group right now…they helped my seven miles absolutely fly by! I really think a long run is the best way to start a weekend!

After my morning run I cleaned up and headed to town to make a visit to my mom and mamaw at their craft show, my sister, and then do some shopping! I have been dying to go shopping since my birthday back in August and I finally found some time to do so…and to make it even better, the shopping trip ended up being successful (more to come on that tomorrow!) After shopping it was time for some dinner club action!!!

(Left to right: Kellie, Heather, Casey-on top, Megan-on bottom, me, and Lauren)

The beautiful Lauren hosted Saturday’s dinner club and we had a bonfire! She made chili and chicken tortilla soup. I have never tried a tortilla soup before, but it smelled so good I knew I had to give it a try. After asking what all the ingredients were to make sure there’d be no surprises for me, I whipped myself up a bowl. It was delicious, and I’m pretty darn proud of myself for trying it! Thank you Lauren…I must get that recipe!

As for my smashing s’mores (recipe from Jessica’s blog)…

…they were definitely a hit! I don’t have an after photo of them because they were all eaten!!! I managed to snag a couple for myself, and they were pretty darn good if I do say so myself! Make them…now!

We all had a great time catching up, meeting the new baby of the group, awing and googling over both babies of the group, eating, drinking, and of course, always laughing.

Oh, and for achieving one of my October goals…

…I tried something pumpkin flavored…pumpkin beer! Yummmm….!

How was your weekend?!

Soaps, Shoes, Swimsuits, and Baby Bottles?

It seems like I am always missing in action on the weekends. I had a busy, busy, busy weekend filled with so many fun things to do!

It all started on Friday (which was my LAST day of Basic Microbiology class! Yay!) and the first thing on my agenda was to have lunch with my awesomely talented momma! We went to a restaurant where you go through a buffet line and create your own stir-fry type entree. You pick your meats, then your veggies, fruits or other “toppings”, then you pick your sauces and seasons. Then they cook it right in front  of you…YUM! As always, when I meet with my momma, she has a new soap from her soap line, and this time it was lemonade! Double YUM!(Please ignore the messy edges…they were stuck bouncing around in my purse all weekend!) She also gave me a bayberry spice soap to give to the hubs!

After lunch I went shopping. My mom and I split ways because my mom hates shopping with me and I am the PICKIEST shopper in the world! I was on a mission for a new swimsuit (which had the possibly of being a catastrophic event) for my upcoming trip to Mexico, sunglasses, and new running shoes.

As picky as I am, I ended up finding two swimsuits! SCORE! This one is from Target and on clearance!

And this one came from American Eagle…The sunglasses are from Aerie.

Now I must say, running shoe shopping was much more stressful than swimsuit shopping. I went to a running specialty store where they watched me walk and measured my feet, then provided me with the shoes that would be best for me. When the salesmen saw what shoes I had been running in, I think he almost croaked! Maybe that explains the knee pain? After finally deciding on a pair, I was given terrifying news…

…they didn’t come in pink.

I asked them to hold the shoes for me, because I wanted to look at others stores and hopefully find a pair that I loved just as much, but that were pink. I ended up finding a pair of pink and white asics at another store and bought them. Then I kept wondering to myself if they really were as comfortable as the shoes from the first store. Oh no…I didn’t think they were…did I make the wrong decision?!?! (I’ll have to tell you about my wedding dress experience similar to this one, HA!)

So, what did I do? I put on the pink pair that I’d already bought, then I walked back into the store that had the blue asics. I took one pink shoe off and put one blue shoe on and compared. They shoe expert was right…the blue pair was so much more comfortable…they were like walking on clouds!

So I bought the blue pair and returned the pink pair. If I’m going to run 26.2 miles, I guess comfort is more important than cuteness…They are still pretty cute…they’re more of a purple than a blue, which is good in my books. Maybe I’ll just buy some pink shoe laces to spruce them up a bit 🙂

The next day I sold some appliances. HAHA! That’s what I do for part time work right now. Can you imagine that?…me?…selling washers and dryers?! I can’t either! But that’s what I do!

After work, the hubby and I headed over to our friends Casey and Seth’s house for dinner club! (I will have to tell you more about dinner club another time…it is great!) We were also celebrating that two of our dinner club friends are having little baby boys soon! Yay! To help them celebrate, all the husbands got to do something really cute…(Notice what is in all of their hands?)Too funny! I LOVE IT!

This weekend I also received some more donations for Girls on the Run, and I had my first donation from a reader! Thank you Carly CarlyBananas! I can’t tell you how thankful I am! I am so close to reaching the minimum amount that I need to raise, but as you may know, I like to smash goals! Please help me by spreading the word! Thank you so so so so so much!

How was your weekend?!

My Friday Favorites!

I have missed blogging!!!  My to-do list is a mile long, and unfortunately, studying Microbiology and going to work has been higher on the list than blogging 😦  Don’t worry, the test is Monday, so I’ll be back to blogging everyday by then!  It is crazy that my site is not even a month old yet, but blogging has turned into somewhat of a meditation for me…a part of the day that is just for some “me” time…a time when I can share my thoughts instead of keep them deep down to myself…a time when I can talk about my past and look forward to my future!

In all the joyfullness that Friday’s bring, I’d like to share with you some of my favorite things…right now…

Favorite Number One:

Coffee!!!  I haven’t been drinking coffee very often lately…mostly because I always forget to make it in the morning or all my coffee cups are sitting in the sink…dirty.

Un-fav: the Microbiology textbook under the coffee…definitely NOT one of my favorite things!

Exhibit Number Two:

Tom’s Shoes! For every pair you buy, Tom’s will give a pair of shoes to a child in need!  What could be better than that?  I got these for Christmas and I haven’t been able to wear them very much, but I’m busting them out today! These are a pair that I would love to have!

Un-fav:  price. (But at least it’s for a good cause!)

Favorite Number Three:

Not necessarily the taste (even though it is pretty tasty), but I’m loving the smell of honeydew. Particularly honeydew soap by Soap It Up, Gourmet Soaps By Di.  (I happen to be a little biased because the owner of this small business is my momma…but her soaps really are amazing!) I also want to buy the Honey, Do! {what a cute play on words!} scent for my Scentsy burners.  The smell of honeydew is just so fresh and makes me sooo excited for summertime!

Favorite Number Four:

My date with Yogurtini today!  Yum yum…coconut soft serve with tons of fresh fruit and chocolate chips on top!!!

Favorite Number Five:

I am loving all the support I receive from all of YOU on my last post!  You never know how you will be perceived when telling a story about your past…especially when it is about a controversial subject like eating disorders.  I am not ashamed of my eating disorder, but it can still be challenging to talk-or blog-about it.  Thank you for ALL of your support!

I am gearing up for a busy, busy week!  It all started yesterday afternoon, as I drove into town to do some shopping.  I don’t shop very often because I’m pretty “frugal” (although I would love to do it more if I just had more money…someday).  I bought my sister some super cute Betsy Johnson earrings for her birthday…

…and I bought a new purse and some running capris for myself!  I don’t think I’ve ever owned an article of clothing actually made for running…I just always wear t-shirts and sweatpants or shorts.  I am so excited to wear them…I am going to wear them this Saturday at my second ever 10K race!

After shopping I met up with my beautiful little sister to celebrate her birthday (a little early).

I gave her the earrings and we went out to eat at Chilis.  I just LOVE Chilis…probably because I am in LOVE with salsa and Chilis has an excellent salsa!

She is gorgeous! {Notice the new earrings}

After dinner and drinks we went back to her new apartment and enjoyed even more quality sister time.  I feel so lucky to have such an amazing sister.  She is just about to finish her Masters in Social Work; she is beyond intelligent and she has a heart of GOLD. She goes after her dreams, stands up for what is right, and is one of the most loving people I know…to her family, to her friends, to her clients, and to complete strangers.

When we’re together we like to reminisce…

…and make new memories.

…and sometimes just be silly.

{Where did that comment come from?}  My eye was red and swollen because of allergies, so we made a make-shift eye patch with a folded up wet paper towel, ice, and an elastic headband…sorry…no pics.

What a fun night we had.  I just love her so much…love you Boo{zer}!

So what’s in store for the rest of my week?  I’ll be working a lot, I’ll be going to meetings with advisors for different nursing schools, I’ll be finishing up my final workouts before my race, and I’ll be running in my race on Saturday!  I am so excited to be able to write my first race recap soon!
