Well Hello There November

I woke up bright and early this morning, threw on my marathon t-shirt to go workout in (it’s crazy how awesome that shirt still makes me feel!), ran hard, got buff, came home, browsed Pinterest, drank protein, showered with the most delightful buttercream flavored (scented?) soap, realized that the scent reminds me of fall, pondered about how I’m actually loving fall…

…and then I realized that it is November!

What a way to start the month! A run, weights, Pinterest, and buttercream?
Yes please!

But before I get too far ahead of myself, let’s look back at October…which somehow is over and gone, even though I’m pretty sure it just started yesterday.

In October I stuck to my half marathon training plan…kind of…well…for the most part. I did all my long runs, and I did most of my speed workouts, so I’ll call it good. I’m really loving long runs right now, especially in the cooler weather, and especially with good company (thanks Fallon)!

In October I cooked a little bit. I don’t think I could say that I cooked more than I cooked in September, but I didn’t cook less. The good news is that I’m trying here people. Glass half full!

In October I tried something pumpkin flavored…and loved it! So much so that I bought another six-pack a couple weeks later at a whopping $9.50.

In October I put my creative juices to work! I created menus for Spa Nova, and I actually sewed something that I found on Pinterest. My creativeness has been flowing in other directions, too, but still a work in progress…I’ll share soon, though, I promise. However, my ambition to spruce up this blog took a backseat to my Pinterest addiction…the only thing I added was my Pinterest account to my contact page…because I know you are just as addicted as I am!

In October I, sadly, did not read a book. But, I have chosen three books to read…now I just have to open one up and get started!

Most importantly, in October I kept the faith (although I may have faltered ever so slightly) and I was happy. I finally received the good news I had been waiting for, and now I am more excited than ever to conquer some more goals! (And I’m extremely excited for January when I get to start school again…still not sure where I’ll be attending yet…) I have also attended a church here in town a few times, and although the husband and I still don’t know if it’s the church for us, just going has been amazing. I love getting home on Sunday morning with a church song stuck in my head. It definitely makes for a great week ahead!

I have some pretty hefty goals for the month of November, so I’m going to dedicate an entire post to them later. For now I’m going to enjoy this beautiful November morning with a nice cup of coffee!

So-long October, hello November!



Speechless and a Giveaway Winner

August is Making Me Smile

Oh my goodness, this week is turning out to be so amazing. Actually, this entire month has been super great, and each coming day brings something new and exciting!

This week started out awesome on Sunday with the Susan G. Komen 5K in Kansas City. I have never been a part of a Susan G. Komen event before, and I highly recommend it to anyone who ever has the opportunity. There were over 30,000 people registered to be a part of it…it truly was a sight to see!

Not only was it a moving and inspiration event, but it was also the hubs’ very first 5K race! I was so proud of him, and it felt great to cross the finish line together! I will post a race recap with more pictures very soon!!!

On Monday I became a television star! 😉

On Tuesday I received this little gem…

I got accepted into nursing school for next summer! I knew the letter would be coming soon, and I obsessively checked the mail everyday. (Usually I only check it once a week…not really the best idea…I don’t think any of my mailmen have liked me!) When I saw where the letter came from, I started having unwanted deja vu from the last time I received a letter about nursing school…but as soon as I read “happy to inform you” I was relieved…and excited, and nervous, and just so darn happy!

On Wednesday I got to go to a cabinet training for my job. I got to watch a bunch of other cabinet specialists play Family Feud with questions about cabinets. (I, of course, did not volunteer to play!) It was totally awesome.

Sounds awesome, right? 😉

Actually, the winning “contestants” won a ten dollar gas card, and the lady sitting next to me gave me her card because she knew I was ten miles until empty and had no clue where the closest gas station was. She also looked up directions for me. It’s nice to come across genuinely nice people in the world!

The actual excitement on Wednesday came later when I got to see…

…drum roll please…………

Katy Perry!

Okay, this picture is obviously fake (and puts my graphic design degree to shame!) But I did get to see her pretty face from afar, witness her witty self, and listen to her catchy songs! (I know I’m a firework! Thanks, Katy!)

Thursday was kind of a plain day. Nothing crazy-exciting happened like the rest of the week, but I did get to spend most of the day with my handsome hubby before he went back to work today. Tear.

I truly am a lucky gal…he still loves me even though our kitchen floor looks like this…

Sorry honey, I’ll put those away today. Well, maybe.

Another reason this week has been great is because I have raised so much more money for Girls on the Run with my blog giveaway!!! I’ve received $90 in direct donations and seven new orders for notecards (that’s $49 more)!

I have a lot of printing, cutting, and folding to do!

Girls on the Run and a Giveaway!

As my marathon training is winding down, so is my fundraising. There are only eleven days left for me to raise money for Girls on the Run (and I desperately need your help!) If you still are not familiar with the organization, that is perfectly okay…I will explain why the program is extremely beneficial to young girls, and why it holds a place near and dear to my heart.

Girls on the Run is a nonprofit organization devoted to inspiring young girls and teaching them self respect, self esteem, and self love through a fun curriculum that incorporates running. The goal of this program is the reduce or prevent to occurrence of eating disorders, depression, suicidal thoughts, or other potentially harmful behaviors in youth. This is extremely important for this age group (eight through thirteen) because this is truly a time when young girls are really growing up and coming into their own.

I can remember back when I was this age, and I do not think I even know what body image was. I didn’t have a negative body image back then, which is a definite plus, especially considering the heartbreaking fact that eating disorders sometimes start in children so young. However, I didn’t know what it meant to have a positive body image and the importance it would have as I got a little bit older.

I also didn’t realize how fun running can be when I was younger…I mostly dreaded running as conditioning for all the other sports that I did. It’s funny the things you learn as you become an adult! 🙂

Now, with only eleven days left to raise money for this amazing organization, I am making my final push to get as close to my fundraising goal as possible! Twenty. BOOM!

Oh. Em. Gee. Seventeen. Days.

In this long process called marathon training, there has only been one day that I feared almost as much as the actual marathon itself. That was the day I had to tackle my longest run ever, that was my peak distance day, that was the day I had to run twenty long, sweaty miles.

Oh, that was today.

Oh, and I killed it!

I’m being honest when I tell you that I wasn’t sure I’d be able to do it…run all twenty. Which in turn made me fear that I wouldn’t be able to finish the entire marathon come August 27th. Today turned that all around! (I’m sure it didn’t hurt that it was only in the seventy degree range with a nice overcast.) For the first time I truly feel that I will be able to conquer the beast that is twenty six point two miles long.

So in honor of my twenty miles this morning, I will give you twenty things on my mind regarding this crazy marathon thing.

1.     I can’t believe I am actually doing this. Never in my wildest dreams did I ever imagine I’d be running a marathon. It just goes to show that anyone can do anything they put their mind to!

2.     I am so excited and honored to be running for Girls on the Run as a SoleMate. Thank you to everyone who has donated or purchased soaps from Soap It Up or purchased notecards from angheartsdesign! There is still time to donate or purchase notecards if you’d like to help!!!

3.     I have finally found the perfect sports bra for long runs after months of searching and trying on hundreds of different ones. Thank you Victorias SecretI still haven’t decided what I’m going to wear on the day of the marathon, though. Well, I’ve decided which shorts I’ll be wearing, but I can’t decide on a top. I’m still on the hunt for a sweet hot pink running tank (but I’m super picky!) to match my sweet new shoelaces…let me know if you see any!

4.     I think I’ve found a short term remedy for my hurting knee. It worked for me today!

5.     I need my Mamzie’s to create me a new special headband for the race. I can’t wait to brainstorm with her and see what she makes!

6.     I can’t wait to spend some time carbo-loading…noodles are now one of my favorite foods! Olive Garden on the 26th anyone?!

7.     I don’t know what I should eat the morning of the marathon. So far all of the breakfasts I’ve had before long run have not been very nice on my tummy. I’m definitely not having oatmeal (learned that today). I’m thinking Larabar and a banana?

8.     I’ve been thinking about possible goals for my marathon time…and I have many different ones in my head. There are so many variables that can play into how I will run: heat, hills, humidity, my knee, ect.

9.     My main goal is to finish the marathon…and hopefully that will be under five hours.

10.    My ultimate super-awesome goal would be to finish the marathon in four hours and thirty minutes.

11.    I haven’t been very consistent with my pace during long runs…so I really don’t know which goal is most reachable. Case in point, my eighteen mile long run I ran in three hours and ten minutes. I ran today’s twenty miler in three hours and nine minutes (and forty-four seconds). Makes zero sense.

12.    Today I kicked it with an average pace of 9:29 per mile. That’s pretty rockstar for me, and I’d totally be happy with that on race day!

13.    Today I enjoyed the hills on my route. The hills in Kansas City scare me.

14.    I’m so happy that I will have my hubby and momma there on marathon day to cheer me on! If anyone else wants to attend, PLEASE DO! 🙂  I’m also excited to have so many of my friends running the marathon relay the same day. It will be awesome having them there, also, and hopefully I can keep up with them for awhile!

15.   So far I’ve kept all my toenails intact. I am (maybe overly) optimistic that I will keep all hot pink ten of them when this is all said and done!

16.    I’m excited that it is now the start of taper time, and it is crazy that twelve miles seems like cake now.

17.    I’m looking forward to the celebration after the marathon. I’m waiting to truly celebrate my birthday until after this, so I hope all my dinner club friends know that I’ll be living it up that night! (Or I might just be sleeping…)

18.    I’m literally afraid that I won’t be able to walk when I’m finished. I hope the hubs know he might have to carry me places for awhile.

19.     I can’t believe I’m actually doing this!

20.     Oh, did I mention I rocked twenty miles today? BOOM! 🙂

Who wouldn’t love to send someone an Operation Beautiful inspired message. This might be my favorite design because I think every girl would immediately smile when opening this from an envelope! I know I would!!!

From Sidewalk Chalk to Anatomy Textbooks

With my nursing interview being this week, I had been pondering a question that I knew I’d be asked for a long time.

Why do you want to be a nurse?

It seems like a simple question, but for me it’s not quite so easy. When I think back as far as I can remember, I knew I had a passion for art. From filling up coloring books when I was little to covering the driveway with sidewalk chalk in my adolescence to taking all the art classes possible in high school, and then to graduating with a degree in graphic design in college, I spent all the time I possibly could devoting myself to art.

Art gave me a way to express myself and my feelings. Sometimes art was an escape from reality…other times art was a way I could show the world something I was proud of.

I took the least amount of science classes possible. I took the bare minimum that was required to graduate in both high school and in college. I did well in my science classes, but I despised every second of it. Learning about cells and chemicals wasn’t going to do anything to improve my sketching technique.

Then on May 22, 2006, my life changed forever.  It was the day I was admitted for treatment for my eating disorder.

After being in recovery, I continued on to finish my degree in graphic design two years later. I tried to pursue a career in art, but unfortunately the job market wasn’t ready for me. For two more years I worked other non-art jobs and felt like a failure. Why did I try so hard to do well in school and make good grades and go after my passion? Why didn’t someone just tell me it’d be too hard to get my dream job? What actually was my dream job? And most importantly…did I even want to be a graphic designer and create designs for a company I wasn’t passionate about?

Then two things happened. First I started angheartsdesign. It is my own design company where I can design for the things that I love: weddings, brides, babies, friends, family.angheartsdesignI enjoyed being able to design beautiful things for beautiful people, but I still didn’t feel quite complete. I had been giving eating disorder recovery speeches for a few years now, but there was this growing passion inside of me to do something more.

Trust me, you learn a lot about yourself when you go through eating disorder treatment. I learned to things about myself (that now I think are pretty obvious). I am a perfectionist and I am a caregiver. Now I realize that both of these traits aided me in my eating disorder. I wanted to be the best at everything and I wanted everyone I knew to be happy…what’s wrong with that?! Well, it’s nearly impossible, and it can be extremely detrimental to put all your energies into.

But I’m never going to stop being a perfectionist. It’s my nature. It’s me. I do want to be the best I can be at everything I do. (Key words: best I can be!)

And I’m never going to stop being a caregiver. I want people to be happy. And now, more than ever, I want people to love themselves…to cherish their lives and their bodies. I don’t want self-doubt, eating disorders, and negative body image to hurt anyone else!

So, that is what drives me to do something more. I am channeling my inner perfectionist and caregiver on this mission to become a nurse. I know that I will be able to reach out even more to people as a nurse, and I know that I will love it. Being back in school and taking all these science classes that I originally avoided, I have already found out that I love learning about the human body and what it is capable of. I still love art, and I still love creating designs for angheartsdesign, and I do still hope that someday I can combine these passions of mine somehow.

When it’s all said and done and I actually am a nurse, I don’t know if I will be working directly with eating disorder patients. That is where I picture myself, but if there is one thing that I have learned through all this, it is that God works in curious ways. Who knows, maybe He wants me to work in women’s health, or pediatrics, or who knows where. All I know right now is that I need to trust in Him, and He will lead me on the right path. He hasn’t lead me astray yet.


What’s A Girl To Do?

Since my semester has ended, I have been having a hard time staying motivated. It is so much easier to workout when there is a set schedule…but when that schedule is gone, what’s a girl to do?!

With that said, putting my mini goals on my blog will hold me accountable to actually following through! Sooooo….what are my mini goals?

1. Wake up before 8:30 am on weekdays.

I’ll admit it. I love sleeping in. My bed is so much more comfortable between the hours of 6:00am and 11:00am. However, those morning hours are the best time to just get stuff done!

2. Drink more water!

Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate. Enough said.

3. Stick to my marathon training plan.

This week’s training plan looks like:

Monday: yoga and strength training.
Tuesday: three mile tempo run
Wednesday: four mile run
Thursday: three mile run with sprints and strength training
Friday: rest or yoga
Saturday: cross train
Sunday: nine mile run

4. Stretch! Like, everyday.

5. Design!

Now that I have the summer off school, and possibly the fall, too, I really want to expand my design business! I have just created a new logo for a client that I cannot wait to share with you, but I want create more!

6. Floss everyday. This is a weird mini goal, but I always forget to floss.

7. Take my princess Tia for more walks!
